Essure
The Essure procedure is a sterilization procedure for women in which implants are passed through the body's natural pathways (vagina, cervix and uterus) and placed into the fallopian tubes. These implants stimulate tissue growth that form a barrier, which prevents sperm from reaching the egg. Since no surgical incisions are required, there is minimal pain and discomfort, and most patients resume normal activity the following day. Essure is comparable in effectiveness to tubal ligation, or “tying tubes.”
The Essure system was 99.80% effective after 4 years of follow up and has been demonstrated to be 99.74% effective at 5 years follow up with a small portion of the women undergoing clinical studies. Five year follow up of all patients in clinical trials is ongoing.
